RCA & Public Health of England

About Project

Client: Public Health of England

Type of work: Service design

Date: May 2019- June 2019

Extent of the project: full time 5 weeks

Public Health England aims to protect and improve the nation's health and wellbeing, and reduce health inequalities. We work with them to better target individuals and keep people healthier by using data and digital technologies. We come up with Breeze. It’s an online platform and with a self-check toolkit caring women vagina’s health.

Vaginitis is a very common infection affect a women's health. Around 33% of women will get bacterial vaginosis. 60% of women who have that before are likely to see it return in a year. Vaginitis including BV is an inflammation of the vagina that can result in discharge, itching and pain. It can be caused either by natural causes or sexually transmitted infections.

Research

We conducted 10 interviews with women from 20-30 years old to understand how they got vaginitis and what the problem they have been facing before, during and after treating vaginitis. Through the interviews, we also knew their emotion changes during that time and what stakeholders involved in the whole process.

When analysing the conversations, we noticed that the main problems were: no reliable and digestible information online, time-consuming to see the doctor and faced the infection alone.

Then we also did some research about the relevant system about vaginal health like online systems: SH:24, sexual Health of London, Babylon; offline systems: Sexual Health Clinic and Boots pharmacy. And to better understand the treatment process we also talked with other stakeholders like GP in NHS. The conversations proved one of our assumptions is not right that patients should go to see a GP immediately when they got infected. But we found that GPs are overloaded, they want their patients able to treat vaginitis themselves first.

Co-creation workshop

We built a storyboard and a service blueprint for our initial idea and further developed after the co-creation workshop with PHE.

The goal of our service are: deliver more accessible and women healthcare service, quick and easy self-diagnose service, and accurate vagina health knowledge in the right language.

To satisfy user needs above and balance stakeholders benefits, we introduced Breeze to PHE. It is a digital platform that helps women to understand their vagina better with data.

My role this project

Using service design tools to do user research, define problems and develop ideas for PHE.

  • Desk research, understand the problem and situation, think some assumption.

  • Interview with different stakeholder to verify these assumptions.

  • Using Stakeholder map to clear relationship between different stakeholders in the whole system.

  • Using persona, storyboard and journey map to co-creation in the workshop and develop idea.

  • Identify problems from users as well as opportunity space. Iterate idea from user test.
